Elective Surgery
Elective Surgery is subject to choice, as opposed to urgent or emergency surgery. This classification of surgery may include both soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery, and is not really a sub-classification of surgery. The most commonly performed elective surgeries are castration (neutering), ovariohysterectomy (spaying) and onchyectomy (de-clawing). These surgeries are also considered part of preventative medicine. Castration and ovariohysterectomy prevent unwanted pregnancies and help reduce the incidence of certain types of tumors as well. Onchyectomy prevents unwanted destruction of household items (many cats are abandoned or released outside due to this problem which greatly increases the risks of infectious diseases or trauma, especially due to automobile contact).
